PROFESSIONAL ACTIVITIES (Clinical, Supervisory, Teaching, Management)

From January 1991 to March 2003 he worked as a psychologist at the Therapy Centre for Dependent Individuals  (KETHEA) a non – governmental  non – profit organisation, financed by the Ministry of Health, established in 1987 following a pilot operation of two therapeutic units from 1983 to 1987. KETHEA is the largest and oldest organisation in Greece providing treatment services to substance users / abusers, dependents and to their families & relatives. Its activities however, span from primary and secondary prevention interventions, harm reduction activities, treatment, research in the field of substance use/ abuse, to provision of education to professionals working with drug users. KETHEA is a NGO with Special Consultative Status with the UN (ECOSOC). KETHEA is the umbrella organisation of many agencies each of them servicing different populations in various places in Greece. Two of these agencies are the Treatment Network “KETHEA-STROFI” and the Early Intervention Network “KETHEA-PLEFSI”. Both these agencies are servicing drug using-abusing or dependent adolescents (age 13 – 20) as well as their families.

From January 1991 to February 1994 he worked as treatment personnel at the Open Care T.C. of the Treatment Network for adolescents and their families “STROFI”. “STROFI” services adolescents (13-20), along with their families, who either use, abuse or are dependent on psychoactive substances. Among his duties were individual and group counselling and psychotherapy designing and implementing treatment plans, doing group therapy sessions and other psychoeducational activities. From November 1993 to February 1994 he was Deputy Head of the unit.

From March 1994 to January 1997 he was the Head of the Family Counselling and Therapy Centre of the above mentioned Treatment Network where he worked mainly with parents and siblings of drug abusing adolescents who either were in treatment or not. Apart from his managerial duties in the unit, he did individual and group counselling as well as multi-family and multi-couples group therapy. He was also responsible for conducting family therapy sessions with families in treatment. Finally he was responsible for supervising a group of parents who had graduated from the treatment programme and acted as “leaders” in “mutual help groups” that have been (are) taken place at the Centre. From May 1995 to April 2002 he was the director of the whole Treatment Network “KETHEA-STROFI”.

In April 1996 as Scientific Director, along with two colleagues, he started the operation of the first in the country pilot early intervention programme for adolescents who use or abuse psychotropic substances (mainly cannabis) on an occasional / experimental basis as well as for their families. These adolescents do not normally have abandoned school or have criminal activities. This programme had been implemented at the SECONDARY PREVENTION CENTRE, of the Treatment Network “STROFI” until July 2000, when it came to be the second Network of KETHEA for adolescents and has been renamed to Early Intervention Network “KETHEA-PLEFSI”, which he directed until April 2002.

During his directorship the Treatment Network “KETHEA-STROFI” and the Early Intervention Network “KETHEA-PLEFSI” came to offer their services to about 320 drug using adolescents and to 700 parents and siblings on a daily / weekly basis, depending on the phase of treatment and employed 44 full-time professionals, 20 part-time and 18 part-time volunteers. His duties as director of “STROFI” and “PLEFSI” were: the supervision of the deputy-directors of the two Programmes, the training of the personnel of the two Networks, the clinical supervision of the staff, direct clinical work with individuals groups and families, and the management of the programmes.

In April 2002 he undertook the position of  Deputy Director of KETHEA, which he held until his resignation from the organisation in March 2003. His responsibilities in this position were the designing, development and supervision of adolescent programmes in various Greek cities (Thessalonica, Volos, Piraeus, and Patras.) From 1995 to his resignation he was also a trainer and clinical supervisor at the Training Institute of KETHEA in subjects relevant to adolescent drug use, systems oriented therapy and addictions, supervision etc.

From October 1998 until June 2011, he was a member of the scientific committee of the Laboratory for the Study of Human Relations (LSHR), and a trainer and supervisor  teaching the subjects of “Systemic Psychotherapy” and “Family Therapy” at the 4year Systemic and Family Therapy Training Programme of the LSHR. He had also organised and implemented various brief and long term seminars and workshops on psychotherapy of addictions, the family of the therapist, myths and stories in therapy, attachment and psychotherapy, neuroscience of attachment etc.

Since April 2003 he is in full private practice in Athens as Clinical Psychologist, Psychotherapist, Family Therapist, Substance Abuse Counselor & Clinical Supervisor. He works with individuals, couples, families and groups.

He is one of the three founding scientific directors of the  Training and Research Institute for Systemic Psychotherapy “Λόγω Ψυχής”, which, among other things, trains and supervises mental health professionals in an enriched form of systemic psychotherapy SANE (System Attachment Narrative Encephalon).

Since its foundation in 2011 he is a trainer & a clinical supervisor at the 4 year training program for psychotherapy of the Training and Research Institute for Systemic Psychotherapy “Λόγω Ψυχής”, where he also conducts & directs seminars and workshops for mental health professionals as well as for the public.

He has co-edited two books (in greek) (“Healthy body in a healthy mind” and “Systemic approach: Theoretical views and applications”) and has published articles and book chapters. As a keynote and invited speaker, he has presented papers and carried out workshops at many Greek and International Conferences.
