Counselling is the process that aims at helping an individual, a couple, a family, a group of people to resolve conflicts, to make decisions, to confront crises, to improve relationships and to deal with personal, social, psychological problems or difficulties in general.

The process takes place in a professional setting by a properly trained counsellor.

It is usually of a certain number of sessions and can be implemented at various settings such as schools, work, hospitals, private practices etc.

Although it is, many times, confused with psychotherapy, or the two concepts are used interchangeably, there are differences between them. The more characteristic being the duration and the focusing on a specific issue. Counselling usually refers to a brief treatment that centres around behaviour patterns. Psychotherapy focuses on working with clients for a longer-term and draws from insight into emotional problems and difficulties.
